Welcome to Pokhara
The government offices in Kaski District were initially around northern part of the Current Pokhara: Bindhbasini Area. In Pokhara, you can still find a lot of Chautari with Bar Pipal Trees, and a Pokhari on their side. People in Pokhara in the past were mainly agricultural based people. They had a lot of cattles. Water in Pokhara was very scarce in winter season because the drainage system was so good that any water after heavy rainfall can drain in a matter of 24 hours. Pokhari were symbol of life and death for the living creatures in Pokhara valley whether it is human being or animals. Thousands of small but artificial Pokharis were there in Pokhara. Most of these Pokharis were dried after the Chinese brought irrigation water, and the City Mayors and local Political leaders to some in the central government (Regional to district Administrators) secretaly registered these Pokharis. Unfortunately, the trees were sold to Limestone kiln owners. Thus all major man made Pokharis are gone. One of this writer's former classmate and his father were local contractors to dismantle these Pokharis and use the trees in their limestone kiln.
So, near Bindhabasini there used to be a Pokhari and around it there were several government offices, and which was called Pokhara in old days. Many people connect the name Pokhara to lakes which is not true. The name Pokhara was based on the Pokhari in the location where we had government offices in old days (before 1975?). This writer had seen the actual Pokhari and the Tree on its corner when he visited once or twice before the government offices were moved to current location in Pardi Area (around Year 1975). We must restore the original Pokhari on which the name Pokhara can be credited. The land should be returned to Public, so that people can visit the actual Pokhara in old and compare it with new Pokhara that has much more significance in the new world stage because of its numerous lakes and nice views of Himalayan Mountains.
